Svalbard Science Forum in cooperation
with the Norwegian Polar Institute has launched a service that enables you to view all
projects registered in the RiS database on Google Earth.
This is a first version of our new mapping function and will currently be updated once a month.
It has functions as an advanced time slider and direct links to the project descriptions in the RiS database.
It is highly recommended to update Google Earth to the most recent version in order to fully make use of the time
slider function.
So far RiS does not have spatial capabilities (we plan to introduce this in the next version). Therefore, only
the place names connected to the projects are available and projects are visualized as dots as the spatial extend
of the projects is unknown. Each dot has an info balloon with basic information about the project and a link to
the full project description in the RiS database.
3 steps towards RiS projects on
Google Earth
1. The program Google Earth needs to be installed on your
computer. You can download it for free from:
www.earth.google.com (make sure to have the most recent
version!)
2. Click on:
http://umberto.npolar.no/ris15/ssfprojects.kml and
open it with Google Earth. The folder 'ssfprojects' will
open under 'Tempory Places'.
3. Move the folder to 'My Places' and Google Earth will
remember the link in the future.
In
the future, it is planned to expand this service in
order to improve functionality both for viewing the content
as well as during project registration. Our aim is to
provide a visual interface where researchers can mark their
study site on the map. In addition, there will be an
interactive menue to enable the users to choose projects eg.
within research topics or from certain institutions.
