About the database |
| This database is a tool to provide information about
ongoing and planned scientific research in Svalbard, and is intended to
facilitate coordination and cooperation of research and field activities. |
| It is fully electronic and replaces the annual project catalogue 'Research
in Svalbard RiS'. All information from this catalogue has been implemented in
the new database and thus is searchable also in the future. |
| Each registered project has a unique ID, the RiS-ID.
You will need this RiS-ID, when applying for permission at the
Governor of Svalbard (www.svalbardscienceforum.no/pages/news255.htm)
and when booking facilities in Ny-Ålesund (http://research.kingsbay.no/). |
| In addition to
the project registration modul there is also a metadatabase
for datasets. Please add information about datasets
collected in Svalbard to this modul. The RiS database only
collects metadata about datasets and not the datasets itself.
However, you can add a link to the dataset during the registion
in order to make your dataset available to others. |
| For a short "how-to" for the
database read
http://www.ssf.npolar.no/pages/news130.htm |
| |
| Your contribution needed |
| The database is only as valuable as its contents, and we
very much appreciate
your assistance in submitting the relevant information on your project and
data, regardless of scientific level. Any research effort, from a master’s
thesis to large-scale, multinational programmes, holds a potential interest
to other scientists. |
| |
| Plans for the future |
| The final version of the database is intended to be a one-stop-only
platform for researchers in Svalbard, within which all information,
application for permissions and reporting will be combined. |
| The database will also be extended with a mapping system, including information on field activities and regulations.
The aim is to provide a tool to easily get an overview of research in
Svalbard (What? Where? When? Who? How?) and to avoid undesirable duplication
of research activities. |
| A sketch of the final database can be found
here. |
