New demands for applications to the Governor of Svalbard

From 1 January 2009, the Governor of Svalbard will alter several routines and demands concerning permission application for scientific field work in Svalbard.

The Governor of Svalbard has last week send out letters to research institutions active in Svalbard in order to inform about changes in the routines when considering applications for permission of scientific field work in Svalbard. The main changes are:

Projects and researchers involved in field work will have to be registered in the RiS-database PRIOR to the application to the Governor. The applications will only be handled if they contain the RiS-ID of the project.
Researchers will have to fill in the travel notification for visiting scientists when operating outside management area 10.
Rules have changed concerning handling and storage in the field of equipment, provisions and fuel depots.

New web based application guide for scientists
The Govenor of Svalbard has ambitions to establish an operative web based guide on www.sysselmannen.no within 1 February 2009. It will give instructions on relevant questions, legislation and frameworks in relation to scientific field work in Svalbard. This guide will replace the current checklist for research planning on the SSF webpage.
